Abstract

The focus of this thesis was on performing a non-linear, transient occupant and structure interaction simulation. A finite element model was created of the Auburn University 2005 Baja SAE vehicle in combination with an occupant model. The objective of this work was to develop and verify this model for structural interaction with occupant kinematics. The work consisted of obtaining experimental data from tests and comparing them with a computer simulation. The results of the simulation showed that the model gave an adequate reproduction of low speed impacts, and was useful in simulating the effects of transferring externally applied loads to the vehicle and in turn, to the occupant.
