Genetic algorithms are commonly used in agent based computational economics. In this dissertation they are examined in the context of agent based modeling and economic theory and applications. The drawbacks and strengths of this approach are discussed and two applications are presented. Each application makes use of genetic programming in a different way and the benefits of each are examined so practitioners can decide which is preferred.en_US
