Numerous problems in nonlinear control systems are difficult or impossible to solve with commonly proposed methods of design. For such systems, we propose a two-loop control strategy that we call the subset stabilization approach (SSA), that combines the strengths of nonlinear control design with the flexibility of robust control design. We present several control system examples for which standard control system techniques either fail or perform poorly with respect to regions of convergence. We then apply our proposed method to these systems and compare results. These simulation examples establish that the SSA method provides a relatively simple but powerful method for the design of nonlinear control systems. Further, these observations are bolstered by a theoretical analysis that establishes the principles upon with the success of the SSA is based.en_US
