dc.description.abstractThis dissertation is composed of three essays related to financial institutions and financial stability. The first essay constructs a measure of integration among global banks and examines its impact on bank insolvencies and bank crises. The second essay examines a special funding source, brokered deposits, from its history, regulation, types, and usage. The third essay investigates the concentration of payday lenders in a given county correlates to its regulatory environment, financial and demographic variables. Moreover, it examines the level of crime in a given county and assesses its relation to the presence of payday lenders.en_US
