Purchasing Cannabidiol (CBD) Products for Children: Current Behaviors and Potential Regulatory Actions in the United States

Abstract

Following the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, which legalized hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) with less than 0.3% delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), there has been a significant increase in CBD's popularity and market presence. CBD is recognized for its therapeutic potential; however, concerns have been raised regarding its safety, especially in children. These concerns include the risk of adverse reactions, such as liver damage and interaction with other medications. Given the easy access minors may have to CBD products due to the current legal and regulatory framework, this research aims to assess the public's attitude towards implementing a federal minimum age for CBD purchases, understand current usage and perceptions of CBD products among children, and explore the potential impact of age restrictions on market dynamics. This study seeks to inform stakeholders and policymakers about the considerations needed to safeguard children's health while navigating the expanding CBD market.
