Autoethnography of Alpha Sennon: The Development of WHYFARM- Engaging Children and Youth in Agriculture via Agriedutainment to Contribute Towards Food and Nutrition Security

Abstract

This study examines the professional and personal journey of Alpha Sennon, Founder and Executive Director of WHYFARM (We Help You-th Farm), who has been recognized globally as a youth development specialist in agriculture. Using an autoethnographic approach, the research explores my trajectory from childhood to adolescence, undergraduate studies, and ultimately my emergence as a social entrepreneur and world-renowned speaker. Central to this journey is the development of WHYFARM, an organization dedicated to engaging children and youth in agriculture through innovative agri-edutainment strategies. Special attention is given to creating AGRIMAN Agventures, featuring the world’s first and only food and nutrition security superhero (Agriman), designed to change youth perceptions of agriculture and encourage their involvement. The study reflects on challenges, successes, cultural strategies, and behaviors encountered throughout my journey, while also recognizing the contributions of other professionals who have added value to my work. Guided by constructionist principles, this research aims to understand how experiences, creativity, and self-reflection shape meaning and influence engagement. It also investigates how youth perceptions of agriculture have changed through WHYFARM’s approaches, and how agriculture can be reimagined as a viable and rewarding career for future generations. Ultimately, this study aims to equip young professionals in agriculture with a model for engaging youth, emphasizing the importance of creativity, resilience, and a beginner’s mindset. By documenting my story, this work contributes to the broader discussion on food and nutrition security, youth empowerment, and sustainable agricultural futures. While documenting this journey, eight key themes emerged: (1) Sowing the Seeds – the initial ideas, inspirations, and beginnings of this path, (2) Nurturing the Seedling – the learning, guidance, and support received along the way, (3) Spreading Roots – building connections, networks, and a strong foundation for growth, (4) Broadening Branches – expanding influence, opportunities, and experiences, (5) Harvest Season – the achievements, recognition, and fruits of the journey (6) Post-Harvest Plate- the local, regional, and global impact, (7) Trimming the Thorns- lessons learned from mistakes and missteps that help us grow, and (8) From Plant to Policy- transforming WHYFARM’s agri-edutainment into action to influence policy and systemic change.
