Clomiphene citrate (CC) is a time-honored human fertility drug that has yet to be critically investigated in equine reproduction. The objective of this study was to treat mares with CC to evaluate the effects on follicular recruitment and development, uterine edema, and reproductive hormones. This thesis contains a review of the literature on mare reproductive physiology, follicular dynamics, ovarian stimulation, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Information regarding the use of CC in other species is also provided to establish the foundation for the current study. It is followed by the manuscript entitled, “The effects of clomiphene citrate on reproductive parameters in the mare,” which has been submitted for publication.
