The demand for fast, inexpensive, and accurate sensors is increasing at a staggering rate. Deciding whether to use analog of digital signal processing for these sensors has become a challenge. Even though digital systems have become very fast, often the delay associated with digital signal processing cause stability issues in the systems. Analog circuitry is still needed for these types of systems. The challenges of using on-chip passive components are described as well as so techniques of overcoming the issue. A Linear Tunable Active resistor, proposed by Dr. Bogdan M. Wilamowski, is described in this thesis that attempts to overcome some of the shortcomings that on-chip passive components have. The design, operation, and simulation results of the active resistor are presented, as well as the use of the active resistor as replacements for passive resistors in simple ?lters and a Proportional- Integral-Derivative controller.
